Investment properties are purchased to generate profit through rental income and/or capital gains and are not owner-occupied real estate. According to the National Association of Realtors ® 2005 Profile of Second-Home Buyers "second homes accounted for 36 percent of all residential transactions in 2004, with 23 percent purchased for investment purposes and 13 percent for vacation residences."
